Burst Of Colour

This fabulous editorial in V magazine is so eye-catching and breath-taking, I hardly know how to describe it. Each photo has caught a moment where the fabrics flow and the colour match so well. It reminds me of the Steven Meisel shoot 'Vogue Patterns', so elegant and is a feast for the eyes.

Paper Manipulating

So I was sitting there, I had a blank white sheet of A1 paper, some scissors, some glue, and a lot of spare time. Out of this paper, I fashioned myself a delicate hat that I am rather proud of, maybe I'll wear it to town this eve, what do you think?

TATE

I feel a bit naughty putting this photo up as I got yelled at by the security guard for taking a photo...but she'll never find out! This has to be one of my favourites, '30 pieces of silver' by Cornelia Parker. This piece took up the whole room, and was made up of 30 circular arrangements of flattened silver objects, from trophies to forks, suspended 6 inches off the floor. It was a beautiful piece.

I took my little sister Edie to TATE modern the other day, they have turned the Turbine Hall into a scene some 50 years in the future. You walk through green and red strips, and into an area you feel has been quarantined, not to mention the giant metal spider looming above you, or the over-sized fruit and skeletons, it was certainly an experience!

(P.S. sorry about the photos, my camera decided not to turn on so I had to use my camera phone).

Marie Antoinette

My last post made me watch Marie Antoinette (2006) for about the 100th time last night, God, what a genius Sofia Coppola is! And the costume design...is the best part of the film. If you haven't seen it (why??) then I strongly recommend you get it out and spend and night in enjoying the tastiness of the colours and textures of the film.

P.S. Look out for the pale blue converse in the background of the scene where she is getting ready for her birthday!

Grace Jones

Singer/Model/Actress

Grace Jones consistently managed to stun and shock people; even up to this day. She is most famous for her image rather than her songs or films, and her image has inspired me so for my Ballet project. I know what you are thinking, ballet and Grace Jones in the the same sentence? Just look at her poses, her silhouette, how can this not inspire me? Her masculine features are a great contrast to the soft colours and fabrics used in ballet and her poses are more geometric than ballet-esque. This is the type of coupling I'm looking to shoot for my project.

Grace Jones - Vogue Italy

Steven Meisel shot a series of images in an ode to Grace Jones' iconic 80's style.
"Meisel has used shadows to portray Dali-esque shapes, contrasting with spot lighting to reference the films, music videos and vibe of the late 80’s to advantage. Grace Jones epitomised the strong, powerful yet ambiguous mood of the time with women challenging their archetypal roles and more than meeting their male counterparts in the world of business. This was the introduction of the “power suit” and shoulder pads after all!" (http://www.fashion-ation.net)
I think these images are shot so perfectly, I could instantly recognise who it was, the styling is superb.

Rankin

Rankins images for Dazed & Confused are the main reason I want to shoot my photos as silhouettes. Just looking at how strong the images are and how they jump off the page. This is the effect I want my photos to have on people.

Lolita

The other night I was skimming the DVD shelf in the library, searching for the perfect tuesday night film. I found four that I then proceeded to watch that night...they were...The Secretary, The Wild, Boogie Nights and Lolita (an eclectic mix!)The film that inspired me the most, although i must admit ashamedly that I watched the re-make, not the original, was Lolita, purely for it's styling. This vintage stlye that has recently become very popular is a look I aspire to achieve.

Edie

This is a photo I took of my sister, and I would say it is a great example of perfect styling, very simple, yet, it works so well!

The colours in this photo also work really well, yellow wellington boots, white tennis racket, green grass and a halo of blonde hair.

Drawings

Here are some sketches I did inspired by a Vogue photo shoot.  I thought it was fitting for my tribe project on Ballet dancers because of their hair style, the colours used and the clothing. I really enjoyed drawing these and think that drawing bodies like this helped me to understand the anatomical structure better.

Vogue Vintage

I came across this photo shoot in Vogue's May issue, 'Fifties romance and bohemian influences come together on a wild and distant shore'.  I thought it was beautifully shot and styled. The clothes have a new-life look to them, but still keep their history.  Shot by Photographer Patrick Demarchelier, these photos have a nostalgic essence, almost as if they were recycled for this shoot from a vintage store.

Amazing clothes, great model, great sets and wonderful photography.

Home From Home

As I was walking along Whitstable beach, I came across these brightly coloured beach huts and thought the colours, shapes and patterns were very inspirational. They remind me of a candy shop, an assortment of flavours.
Some of the huts were old and broken down, but I thought these were the ones with the most character. I wondered how many years they had been standing there and how many people had called them their own.

M&S Bag dress

As I was making my way through Marks & Spencers, I came across this dress made entirely of
M&S plastic bags.  The point of the dress was to promote their Plan A scheme (www.marksandspencer.co.uk/plana) which will see M&S work with customers and suppliers to combat climate change, reduce waste, safeguard natural resources, trade ethically and build a healthier nation.  I thought it was a great eye-catching way to make the point.

"This is not just green...This is M&S green"

I really admire the fact that M&S have introduced this new initiative and are charging 5p for their carrier bags. Seeing as such a well established company has started this new policy, I hope others will follow suit and help save our planet!

Maravilloso!!

Photographer - Paco Peregrin

These photos are really beautiful and the composition is amazing. Peregrin Lux won the gold in Barcelona at the sixteenth edition of the Awards of Professional Photography with the editorial "In My Room", published in the past number of July / August in NEO2 (Spanish Magazine).

This Photographer really inspired me, so I decided to do a bit of research on him. Paco Peregrin works as a photographer and art director for clients like Nike, Diesel, Adidas, Lee, Mazda, Toyota, Levi's, EMI Music, Cosmopolitan TV, etc. He publishes for recognized magazines such as Glamour, Zink, Rolling Stone, Neo2, Eyemazing, Vision, Vanidad, Hint, Flux, DT, Tendencias or FHM.

"His work is defined by a marked character of hybridization of styles where come together the latest fashion trends and the most personal conceptual reflections, always providing to his images with a sensual, elegant and mysterious, even perturbing character, trying to interrelate the point of view of the traditional spectator of works of art with the most generic public of the mass-media."

SHITDISCO 'OK'

This is an amazing music video I found whilst aimlessly wandering around Youtube. It features the band (SHITDISCO...) as sort of puppets in a pop-up book. It's so well done and is completely in sync with the music .
I love how they've taken such a simple idea and made it look incredibly interesting. The great thing also is that it must have been so cheap to make! The crafty-ness of the video reminds me of The Maccabees "Toothpaste Kisses" video, which is also brilliantly done.

Showroom Magazine

Showroom Magazine is a free online-magazine which shows the latest in advertising, photography, architecture, graphic and product design. It draws in readers from all over the world, and is definitely a feast for the eyes. The advertisements are interactive, so all you need to is click on the advert to go to the website or send an e-mail. The photography and illustrations are so modern and exciting, and the technology is amazing. You can flick through the pages as if you were reading a real magazine, except it's all free!

This is something I'll be keeping an eye on in the future!
